Espresso Machine Cleaning

Trainer: When it comes to cleaning the machine, you always want to make sure that you are keeping the grounds and keeping them dealt with first and foremost. So I typically like to get these guys out of the way so that I can start on my machine here.
Underneath my machine, we’ll just want to give this a good wipe down to make sure that there’s no grounds in and around here. Just make sure it’s tidy for the next person to come around. These ones will go back, and if they need a rinse, they will also get a rinse. But we haven’t really used it much today, so they’re okay with just a quick wipe down.
We’ll always make sure that our steam wand is clean. If you’re in a very busy cafe, I would recommend taking a cup with some hot water, and just giving it a small soak while you’re doing the rest of your cleaning. Then we’ll move over to the grinder here and our portafilter.
First, I like to clean out my portafilter. Make sure there’s no coffee inside. And then we will take this guy apart. So the way that I typically will do this is I’ll take a spoon and I’ll put it underneath, and I’ll just try and crack it open this way. Do it this way. There’s multiple parts to this guy.
This one here, this is where the espresso grinds go through to create the espresso we know and love, and then this part in here. We’ll just want to give this a real good clean and wipe down. And depending on your cafe, they might soak these for a little while before they put them back into the machine. They pop together just with a click. Perfect.
After that’s all good to go, we’ll wipe down our area here. And make sure there’s no grounds hiding in all these little small pesky places. This will get washed, these will get washed as well, and our rags will also get washed. At the very end, when the machine is all clean, we will take this piece here. It is very similar to the piece that we had just removed, but it has no holes in the bottom. Since it has no holes, we can pop in a cleaning tablet, pop that inside here, and that will clean through the machine. But this is one that you will learn based on the machine that is at your place of work, because it’s different depending on the machine, depending on the company. But that is the basic way to do it.
